Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson East recently found out she was pregnant with her first child, and then miscarried just two days later.
In an emotional video posted on YouTube, Shawn and her husband opened up about their traumatic experience.
“The past 48 hours have been some of the happiest, scariest and saddest times of my life,” Shawn wrote in the caption of the video she shared on Sunday, “My husband Andrew and I found out that we were unexpectedly pregnant, only to find out hours later some tragic news. I have been crying more than I ever have, but am still optimistic for what is next.”
The video begins with Shawn and her husband: “Today’s video is a little bit sensitive,” she says, “It’s not the happiest video, but we feel like a lot of people go through this so we wanted to share it.”
The two then shared their experience through vlog-style video footage, beginning with Shawn holding two positive pregnancy tests, right as she first found out the good news. The video then shows Shawn surprising her husband with the news. But just one day later, she's experiencing stomach pain and bleeding.
The couple drives to the doctor's office and bravely shares the experience of getting their first ultrasound, talking to the doctor, and finding out the devastating news that Shawn has miscarried. When they are finding out the results, the doctor explains that it's not their fault, that miscarriages are common, and that they will be able to get pregnant again.
The couple filmed their reactions shortly after coming home. “I felt like going into it we weren't sure we were ready for it and we weren't sure we could do it. We were overwhelmed,” she says.
Andrew added: “We were scared…we [weren't sure were ready for it], but then we started talking about it and getting excited about it.”
Shawn tearfully explains that she was excited to start buying baby clothes and picking out names—and holds up the baby shoes that bought to surprise her husband with the news. “But we will use them again, of course,” she says, “It won't stop us. We'll start a family here soon.”
Like other celebs who have opened up about their miscarriages, Shawn and Andrew's brave choice to share their experience will help other couples realise they are not alone.
